The Problem of Evil and The Existence of God

The Problem Stated The problem of why God allows evil to exist is a major hurdle to developing faith in God in the first place.  Even after we come to faith, Satan will use this problem to try to trip us during difficult periods in our lives.  Years ago, I read a...

Where Was God on September 11?

Some days we never forget, for they are indelibly imprinted on our hearts and minds. I remember exactly where I was when I learned of the death of President Kennedy nearly 40 years ago. Such shocking historical events are etched deeply in our memory banks. September...

What Happens When We Die?

Motivation—A Deeper Look

Part 1 -- Guilt or Grace? Part 2 -- Correction or Inspiration? Introduction to Part 1 In Christianity, motivation is everything! If this statement is an example of hyperbole (an overstatement to make a point), it is only slightly so. God is not nearly as interested in...

Do You Want to Get Well?

Introduction This article is a written form of a spoken message delivered on March 28, 2004 to the Phoenix Valley Church of Christ.  As with the previous sermon, “What Do We Now Believe?,” I wanted our members to be able to study out this material in more depth, and...

Appreciating Our History

NOTE:  This article was written back in 2002, prior to the startling changes in what we have called in ICOC.  In some ways, therefore, it is somewhat dated.  However, the biblical and practical lessons found in it are worth sharing in our present day.  In some ways,...

A Balance of Power—Or a Team?

Several years following 2003 ushered in a time of unsettledness, upheaval, re-examination and uncertainty within most churches of the ICOC movement. Some things connected with this time have been good, and some have been bad. Without going into the reasons for the...

Self-Starters and the Rest of Mankind

I recently had an experience and an insight from it that may be very significant to the way we are leading the church.  The recent experience was going through the Dynamic Marriage facilitator training program.  Although the purpose of this brief article is not to...

Golden Rule ‘Followership’

Co-authoring a book like Golden Rule Leadership has been a daunting task. Which of us thinks we have perfected Jesus’ style of leading? Certainly not Wyndham or I. Our primary goal in writing this book was to give insight and input as peers seeking to imitate Jesus,...

The Deity of Christ

First, consider the Old Testament references to the eternal nature of Christ.  Isaiah 9:6-7 alone should establish the point beyond any doubt. For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders.  And he will be called...

Struggling With Faith in God

How Did I Get This Way? (Better Yet, How Can I Change?)

Facebook Posts

As stated in another post earlier today, my books, whether published by Amazon or Illumination Publishers, were removed from Amazon for a couple of months due to some technicalities, which have now been resolved. As of yesterday, they are all back up on Amazon. Since I cannot yet provide a direct link, just go to Amazon and type in my name and the book title. I will make two separate posts about two of my most recent books, since I want to include some observations about each. Since I have not been active on Facebook recently, my posts will have limited exposure, algorithms being what they are! Therefore, please pass these posts on to your friends. Thanks much!Someone recently asked which of my over twenty published books has sold the most copies and which has sold the least. Oddly, my fairly recent book, “My Roller Coaster Ride with God and Cancer,” has sold the least. Given the fact that cancer is so prevalent among our friends and family members, I am puzzled that folks seem reluctant to read my book. Rest assured that this is not a book about cancer per se, but about lessons learned and insights gained from having it (and surviving it)! When you are seriously contemplating meeting your Maker, the lessons and insights gained should be expected to be some of the most valuable possible. I believe mine are. Get the book and read it – you won’t be sorry! ... See MoreSee Less

Thanks much!My book, “The Bible and Women,” has sold hundreds of copies, and in combination with Jeanie Shaw’s book on the same topic, have had the type of influence we had hoped for. The number of churches having women teach audiences consisting of both men and women, including Sunday sermon slots, is increasing. A part of this needed change has been encouraged not only by books like ours, but a growing awareness of how historical and cultural contexts in the New Testament have often been ignored and better interpretative principles are now being applied. Both Jeanie and I have addressed these principles. Thanks to all who have read my book and those who will read it! ... See MoreSee Less
